LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - William Leo McDougall was living in a retirement home when he supposedly had an episode during which "he was detached from reality." During this episode, he decided to murder his roommate, 94-year-old Manh Van Nugyen.
Using a wooden rod, McDougall beat Nugyen to death as he slept. The victim's family pleaded with prosecutors to impose a sentence of lifetime imprisonment, but prosecutors only asked for lifetime probation instead. The defense argued that McDougall was suffering from early stage dementia and must undergo dialysis three times per week for kidney failure. McDougall's wife has apologized to the family for the murder. © 2012, Distributed by NEWS CONSORTIUM. - - - Pope Benedict XVI's Prayer Intentions for January 2013 General Intention: The Faith of Christians.
